USC SUMMER SCIENCE CAMP FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS
Overview
The application deadline for summer 2009 has passed. We hope that you apply next year!
"A woman’s place is in the lab . . .or in the field . . .or anywhere she chooses to be."
The USC Summer Science Camp for Middle School Girls invites young women to be a part of a community of scientists. Students will discover and explore the aquatic and terrestrial life of Catalina Island and its surrounding waters.
Exploring the Environment
This field-oriented camp challenges students to explore ecological and biological principles through an interactive approach to learning:
- field and laboratory research,
- self-guided experiments and
- educational simulations
These activities instruct students about the interaction among physical, chemical, and biological components of the environment. Students will also learn about the impact that human activities can have on the environment. Science is integrated with cultural and social studies to offer a well-rounded view of an island ecosystem.
Building Relationships
A dynamic community of women scientists is built through team projects, instructional and recreational activities and mentoring programs. Students interact with graduate and faculty women who are studying various aspects of science. They will explore diverse careers in environmental, biological, and physical sciences.
